Lesson Plans for May 14 - 18, 2012

ENGLISH 9 – 10 (Periods 1 & 4)

Monday & Tuesday (PERIOD ONE)

Learning Objective:  TLW read and analyze the storytelling techniques of H.P. Lovecraft.

Instructional Activities:  1. Writing Technique            2. Analysis          3. Reading

Homework:  The students will start reading “Into The Mountains of Madness” by H.P. Lovecraft and finish it by Friday.

 Resources:  Short Story “Into The Mountains of Madness”

 

Lesson:  Today, the class will begin to read an H.P. Lovecraft story.  While reading it, we will discuss how he builds up suspense, and contrast that with current storytelling techniques of the same genre.

 

Wednesday (PERIOD ONE)

Learning Objective:  TLW assess the poem and short story they have read this week in review for a test on Thursday.

Instructional Activities:  1. Studying              2. Reading           3. Note Taking

Homework:  Study for Thursday’s test.

Resources:  Short Story “Into The Mountains of Madness”, Poem (“J. Alfred Prufrock”)

 

Lesson:  The students will review “The Mountains of Madness”, “Love Song”, and the Poe poems in preparation for a quiz on Thursday.

 

Thursday (PERIOD ONE)

Learning Objective:  TLW demonstrate their knowledge of the “The Mountains of Madness”, “Love Song”, and Poe’s poems.

Instructional Activities:  1. Testing  2. Studying

Homework:  Test today.

Lesson:  The class will take the test on their current reading assignments..

 

Friday (PERIOD ONE)

Learning Objective:  TLW analyze the poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Instructional Activities:  1. Creative Writing                2. Analysis                          3. Public Speaking

Homework:  The students will have to prepare for a quiz on the poem on Tuesday of next week.

Resources:  Essay (Homework), Poem (“Rime of the Ancient Mariner”)

 

Lesson: The class will take turns reading stanzas from “Rime” in class, followed by a discussion about the nature of the poem.  There will be a follow up discussion on Monday regarding the author’s views on redemption and how they apply to the story.  The Creative Writing assignment from last week is due today.

 

 

Monday – Wednesday (PERIOD FOUR)

Learning Objective:  TLW demonstrate their knowledge of the novel, by examining the developing story in Child of the Holocaust.

Instructional Activities:  1. Writing 2. Question & Answer     3. Research          4. Reading

Homework:  The students will have to finish several study sheets regarding chapters 5-6 of the novel.  They should finish reading the novel by Wednesday.

Resources:  Study Sheets (Handouts), Child of the Holocaust (Novel).

 

Lesson:  The class will receive study guides for the last two chapters.  They will fill these out in class and for homework, and we will discuss their answers during class.  The test will be on Tuesday of next week.

They will also discuss the creative writing assignment.  This writing assignment is to be 4 pages long and will be due on Friday of next week.  In the essay, they must write a story about a person who discovers that they have supernatural abilities.

 

 Monday (PERIOD FOUR)

Learning Objective:  TLW review the Child of the Holocaust in preparation for a test tomorrow.

Instructional Activities:  1. Note Taking        2. Debate

Homework:  Study for the test on Tuesday of next week.

Resources:  Child of the Holocaust (Novel)

 

Lesson:  The class will review over the study guide in preparation for a test tomorrow.

 

Tuesday (PERIOD ONE)

Learning Objective:  TLW demonstrate their knowledge of Child of the Holocaust.

Instructional Activities:  1. Testing  2. Studying

Homework:  Test today.

Resources:  Test (Handout)

Lesson:  The class will take the final test on the novel.

 

Wednesday - Friday

Learning Objective:  TLW watch scenes from Der Untergang and a Band of Brothers episode about the liberation of a concentration camp.  They will have to compare those stories to Child of the Holocaust, contrasting those stories with that of the novel.

Instructional Activities:  1. Analysis               2. Media Evaluation         3. Discussion      4. Comparison

Homework:  The students will have to take notes on the stories in preparation for a test on Tuesday of next week.  Furthermore, there will be an essay regarding all three stories, which will be assigned next week.

Resources:  Study Guide (Handout), Films (Der Untergang, Band of Brothers)

Lesson:  The students will watch the films and compare them with the novel. The Creative Writing assignment from last week is due today.

Homework:  Creative Writing assignment should be finished by Friday.

Lesson:  The class will take a test on chapters 4 & 5 of My Antonia.

 

Wednesday - Friday

Learning Objective:  TLW read Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Scandal in Bohemia” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter”, by Nathanial Hawthorne.  They will analyze both stories and prepare for a test on Tuesday of next week.

Instructional Activities:  1. Review  2. Discussion      3. Reading           4. Analysis

Homework:  The students will have to finish reading these short stories for homework.  There will be an essay on these stories, which will be assigned next week.

Resources:  “Scandal in Bohemia”, “Rappaccini’s Daughter” (Short Stories)

 

Lesson:  The class will take turns reading these stories out loud during class (and finish the remainder as homework reading).  With Doyle’s story, there will be a discussion about ‘O’Henry” endings, and with Hawthorne’s, an analysis of stories with a moral intent.  The Creative Writing essay is due on Friday.

Lesson:  The class will take the test on Dracula film.

 

Wednesday - Friday

Learning Objective:  TLW read “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad.  They will analyze the story and prepare for a test on Tuesday of next week.

Instructional Activities:  1. Review  2. Discussion      3. Reading           4. Analysis

Homework:  The students will have to finish reading these short stories for homework.  There will be an essay on these stories, which will be assigned next week.

Resources:  “Heart of Darkness” (Short Story)

 

Lesson:  The class will take turns reading this novella out loud during class (and finish the remainder as homework reading).  The class discussion/analysis will revolve around Conrad’s view of man’s nature.  Is he correct in his viewpoint that humans have a concealed primitive nature?  The Creative Writing essay is due on Friday.
