School History
More than three decades ago, a group of educators saw students who were not reaching their potential within the traditional school setting - they saw an obvious need for change.
They envisioned a school environment that was orderly rather than chaotic, and nurturing rather than threatening. They envisioned a school that would not only deliver a strong education, rich in academics, but that would also help students develop self-esteem. They wanted a school that was empathetic to its students, patient with them and passionate about their success.
In 1978, such a school was founded and approved by the New Jersey Board of Education commission; this school was Barnstable Academy.
Today, Barnstable Academy is a private school on a small, quiet campus in Oakland, New Jersey. By design, our school remains small. Currently, it hosts just over 120 students. The academy is accredited by the National Independent Private Schools Association (NIPSA).
