Barnstable Academy has a dedicated College Advisor who walks each of our students and their family through the college selection and application process. We are proud to boast our impressive college acceptances and scholarships awarded to our students.
In the last two years alone, Barnstable Academy students have earned over $3 million in merit-based college scholarships.
We are proud to be a college preparatory school where nearly 90% of graduates go on to a four-year college or university, 5% attend two-year programs, and another 5% take advantage of a gap year. Our students have been accepted to an impressive roster of two- and four-year colleges and universities.
SAT and ACT Test Prep
Earnest preparation for college often begins with the SAT and ACT. Our college prep school offers a test preparation course which takes place during March and April each year, and ensures that our students are fully prepared. The twelve-session course encompasses the math, critical thinking, and writing components of the exam. In keeping with our philosophy of education, classes are small so that students can maximize their potential.
The College Admissions Process
At Barnstable, we start the college process early. Students are given the opportunity to be given tremendous feedback on their essays and applications by our College Advisor, Rhoda Kirschenbaum.
Early College Program
Some of our students are ready to tackle college-level material as juniors or seniors, and for those students we offer an Early College Program. This transitional program allows students to take one or more three-credit courses during the afternoon at William Paterson University. In nearly every instance, a student who is successful in these courses is allowed to transfer the credit to his or her college upon graduation from our college prep school.
Roster of Colleges
We are proud to be a college prep school where a high percentage of our students go on to college. Barnstable Academy students have been accepted to an impressive roster of two- and four-year colleges and universities, which you can view on our College Acceptances page.
Barnstable Crushes the ACT
A student-written article by Kristen Thauer
Barnstable’s rigorous yet supportive academic program works, and we have strong evidence and data to prove this. Last year’s senior class received over $1.5 million in college scholarships and over 50 college acceptances. Since offering the AP English course, 100% of Barnstable Academy students who have taken the exam have earned exclusively fours or fives on the AP exams.
Barnstable Academy has received its students ACT scores back, and the results are not shocking. We crushed the benchmarks and New Jersey averages! These averages take into account all Barnstable students who took the test, including our best test takers and those who struggle with formal assessments.
“A benchmark score is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses.” - ACT.org.
Barnstable Academy’s class of 2018 is above ALL benchmark scores in ALL measurable categories!
Our school provides students with not only a warm and welcoming environment from a social standpoint but challenges each pupil academically based on their unique learning palette.
The numbers speak for themselves, as do the students. The diversification of every student’s education through elective classes and Period 4 Enrichment courses makes for a personalized education. Students who would not otherwise try new courses and material are encouraged to do so. Passions and talents spark and grow at Barnstable Academy.
This point is especially close to me because it is precisely my experience at this school. I came to Barnstable Academy with a longing for a passion and purpose. Not only has this school provided just that, but has helped me develop as a writer. I joined Journalism out of curiosity and sheer anxiety. I had a fiery hatred for writing. I suddenly found that research and opinion writing was for me, and I wrote political articles for almost every paper. I slowly began to love my craft as my experience and skill flourished. I spent my time editing papers and building the quarterly newspaper and the yearbook. Through many hours in Mrs. Bennett’s classroom typing, I became Editor in Chief of the student newsletter. I firmly believe this is something I would not have pursued anywhere else.
Besides the boring personal anecdote, I am elated to write this article. Barnstable Academy’s college preparatory education works, and I’m looking forward to obliterating my ACT’s. Barnstable Academy’s ACT prep course begins after the winter holiday in January.
A quote from our lovely Head Of School, Dr. Eliason “I am so proud of our Barnstable Academy students academic achievements, and I’m thankful for our teachers providing a truly excellent educational experience.”
