High School Computer Courses at Barnstable
Our computer classes are designed to introduce basic computer literacy skills needed for high school and college, as well as provide opportunities for creative, digital projects using professional software in higher level computer courses.
This course is designed to familiarize the student with the software that will be needed in High School and College. This includes word processing (MS Word), spreadsheets (MS Excel), data bases (MS Access), slide show presentations (MS PowerPoint), computer graphics (Photoshop) and video editing (Premiere). The idea is to give the students practical experience creating the type of work that would be expected in their academic classes.
In this course the student gets to ‘dip their toes’ in the huge ocean of computer graphics (Photoshop/Illustrator), 3D modelling and printing (Blender), web page authoring (HTML/Dreamweaver), video editing (Premiere) and special effects (After Effects). A veritable smorgasbord of software from which the student will ‘sample’ throughout the year. The idea is to give the student an idea of what areas of creativity with computers are available to them in college and as a career using professional software.
Whereas the student ‘dipped their toes’ in the digital creativity ocean in Advanced Computers 1, now the AC2 student ‘dives into the deep waters’. The software covered is for the most part the same: Photoshop/Illustrator/Blender/Dreamweaver/Premiere/After Effects; but the difficulty of the work and the depth of understanding needed to complete the work is substantially more. Students will be required to work with their teacher to design projects based on interests and goals assigned by the teacher. The intent is to create professional level work. In line with this, students will be encouraged to submit their work to online authoring sites such as 99designs.com and Fiver.com.
“The world is your oyster!†– In this class, the student is expected to be fluent with the software covered in Advanced Computers 1 & 2. Along with this level of skill, the student is required to design and implement long term projects. The teacher will provide advice, guide and assess progress throughout the process. Once a project is completed, a new one will be designed and implemented. As the student explores interests and areas of strength, a better sense of direction as it pertains to one’s potential career is developed.

AP Computer Science Principles is a course that introduces students to the breadth of the field of computer science. Students learn to design and evaluate solutions and to apply computer science to solve problems through the development of algorithms and programs. The course does not require prior computer science or coding experience.
