Barnstable Academy Will Celebrate 45 Years of Educating Middle and High School Students

(Oakland, New Jersey – March 1, 2023) What started out as an idea to create a different kind of learning experience has been realized 45 years over. Barnstable Academy will celebrate its 45th anniversary later this month with a gala to help support its scholarship foundation.

Barnstable Academy’s mission is to maximize the potential of each student by enhancing self-esteem and providing a high-quality, academically oriented education where students are recognized and supported. Founded in 1978, the academy graduated one senior in its first school year. Since then, more than 800 students have graduated, with last year’s class of 28 seniors being its largest to date.

“It is fulfilling and humbling to lead Barnstable through this milestone, 45 years after my father founded the school,” said Ashley Crowley, Barnstable Academy Head of School. “I’m proud of the families who have come together to create an event that will support more students being able to attend Barnstable.”

The “Scholarship Gala” will take place March 16 at the Cosmopolitan, 1377 NJ-23, Wayne, NJ. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and the suggested donation is $150 per person. There will be dinner, drinks, and dancing, with all proceeds from the event supporting the Barnstable Scholarship Foundation. Alumni are welcome to tour the school located at 8 Wright Way, Oakland, NJ. More information is available here.

Crowley became Barnstable’s Sixth Head of School last school year after serving as assistant director for three years, and 15 years as a teacher. Crowley’s father David John Salembier, Jr. co-founded the school in 1978 and served as the first head of school through 2007. Salembier met his wife, Leslie, a Barnstable Academy math teacher, soon after the school opened. Crowley spent much of her childhood at Barnstable and today uses the same desk her father used when he served as its Head of School.

“Forty-five years of teaching exceptional students is reason enough to celebrate,” Crowley said. “Personally, were it not for Barnstable being founded, I wouldn’t be here, so I am incredibly grateful!”
